Wow, crazy, it has been just about a year from my last post. I have been in a pressed sabbatical, life happened. I yearn to put my hand to the pen again so here I am.

I log into my blog for the first time in a year and I have 12 comments to moderate. I am so excited! It turns out to be links for pharmacy site selling Viagra, invites to see some strange girls unmentionables, Chinese writing, and attempts to start business relationships with me with "real good dejected prices". Really! Is anyone else annoyed that losers out there have to take every cool thing on the net and figure out how to peddle their porn, smack, scams, and links with it?! Nine out of every ten friend invites on Facebook now want to "show me their pics". I should change my gender status just to avoid half this junk!

If anyone is out there (that doesn't want to show me their leaf covered sections!) give me a shout out. Otherwise I am writing to myself. . . again. . . for therapeutic benefits. . .

Fireworks: Man vs. Nature

I am standing out back late at night when I got to see something simply amazing . . . lightning during a Days of '47 fireworks show. It was like a contest between man and nature - who could light up the sky in the coolest way. Both were very impressive!

It is getting weird when my daughter Havalah is bringing me homework that I have to study the chapter myself in order to help her. As a confession, sentence diagramming was my weakest link in the subject of English. Frankly, my fanciest diagramming terms come from the movie Oscar. Oy!

Today they had neighborhood clean up which meant they deposited dumpsters throughout the area for folks to dispose of their junk. And boy do we have junk! I kid you not, four hours later and the six closest dumpsters to my house were full. I managed to get all the stuff I needed out into one of the bins but what a goat rodeo. I'm just happy it is done.

My Irish twins are so funny. They can play for hours at a time and keep each other entertained the whole time. They play with boats, balls, blocks and whatever else their small hands can grasp. Most of the time they pass an object between each other. They also squawk and babble at each other. You wouldn't think they are really communicating anything except once in a while they will start laughing like they just told the funniest joke in the world. This always makes me wonder. . .

My company does a great job when they put on the "Bring your children to work day". They make badges for them, gift bags, activities, T-shirts, the whole nine yards.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

One of the more moving experiences I have had was visiting the Holocaust Museum in Israel, Yad Vashem.

On the last day of basic training of the IDF (Israel Defence Force), they bring the new soldiers to the eternal flame of Yad Vashem. There, the Chief Minister of Defence reminds the recruits of what they fight for.

The most powerful experience was seeing the shoes, thousands of shoes. And then to realize how many were children and baby shoes.

I love Google. And all things Google. One of those applications is Google Reader. My sister had promoted the service for a long time and I didn't bother (old dog, new tricks) but I finally tried it and I love it.

It is really great for a bunch of blogs on publishing and writing I follow but never comment on.

It is not so good for my family or friend blogs that I do want to comment on. I will still usually read them in the Google Reader but then if I want to make a comment I have to stop, go to their blog and make my remark. . .

Google Reader please find a way to comment from thy application!

I had Pookah for Passover. She and all the other children seemed to have a great time!

The meal and the Hagadah went really well and the Spirit was great.

Then today the children had a bunch of fun collecting quail and manna (Peeps and Ritz crackers).

Spirit Week. . .

Most schools have a spirit week in which the different classes compete with one another for a trophy.

I have had the privilege to teach Seminary at a private parochial school, Mountain Valley High School. At this school, they have a Spirit Week. It is a week where they have different guest speakers, devotionals, and lessons about the Scriptures and the Messiah. This year they asked me to teach about the Sacrament.

I shared Joseph Smith's teaching that all ordinances are eternal and showed scripturally how the Sacrament had been observed before, during, after, and to come - in the Messiah. I also shared how the Sacrament renews our covenant and makes us one in Messiah.

My children attend Benjamin Franklin Academy for their schooling. I was surprised and impressed when I was asked to come and give a twenty minute morning devotional regarding the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Passover). I guess they learned from my children that our family observes the Biblical Feasts instead of the typical holidays.

I talked about three central themes.

1) Although we have nothing to offer Him, He redeems us from our slavery and lost state

2) Freedom is found in obedience to God's commandments

3) We are chosen when we choose God

What amazing students. They seemed very open and understanding. It was also fun when I heard my children telling their friends I was their Abba.

Wow. I have been asked to do a bunch of talks, devotionals and firesides of late. I'm grateful for each opportunity and it has really been interesting to have different schools and groups asking me to do it. I hope what is shared really connects to the different audiences and impacts them in a meaningful way.

I am also really lovin' my Sunday School class. We are having a great time going through the Torah (first five books of Moses).

President Ronald Rasband (former CEO of Huntsman Chemical Corporation) was mission president for the NY North Mission. He would occasionally share stories about John Huntsman. One story he related was about Mr. Huntsman definition of a gentleman. John believed a gentleman was a man who could make anyone in any situation feel comfortable in his presence.

This is best definition I've ever heard for a gentleman. It's something I strive for and want to teach my boys . . .

I went to Deaf Mentor conference this weekend. It was awesome! Even though I have native langauage ability in ASL - I learned so much!

I loved catching up with all the people I know in the deaf community. I loved meeting a ton of new families and professionals. Great to network and learn from each other.

They had some great classes. My favorite was Minnie May on how to teach your deaf child to read. Another good one delt with strategies for teaching the whole family sign. Just awesome!

I have grown up with this picture over my mantle.

Honestly, I mostly took it for granted and ignored it. Certainly I studied it once or twice but never really made an effort to consider it, understand the story behind it. I did learn early on it was George Washington but where and why he was praying was not even a question.

Later, at GWU, I learned about the man and the circumstances that inspired the painting. Then later I had the opportunity to see the original - that did it - I absolutely love the painting.

If you have not seen the original, the first thing you need to know it is huge, almost life size. That is incredible considering the detail. Oh! and the detail! I kid you not . . . it is like 3D! The framed copy just doesn't capture it. It feels like you are in the woods with General Washington. Its almost like you are a soldier out to gather wood for a fire and accidentally stumble across your commander in prayer.

Seriously cool! It now hangs in my home. . .

Kyra Gracie is without a doubt one of the coolest women of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. She is very accomplished and innovative in her sport.

Immigration is a topic that passes across the political stage periodically but doesn't seem to get any real progress or reform. I am going to throw out some of my ideas on immagration.

I know many are saying that America would be overrun. I believe there would be an initial surge but it would eventually balance out. Additionally, our country is abundant enough to handle any productive addition to our society. Historically there have been immigration surges that the cynical were certain would destroy America and yet here we are.

> Provisional Citizen - All immigrants are provisional citizens. They have the same rights as regular citizens except that if they commit a felony at any time - they lose citizenship. Additionally they have two years to file a tax return or they lose citizenship.

> Enforce, enforce, enforce - The first key is to give NO BENEFITS! No drivers license. No food stamps. No long term hospital care. No social services. No schooling. NONE! At first blush this may sound harsh, but we have made citizenship accessible to everyone who will play by the rules. We should give no incentives or benefits to those who do not.

The second key is to arrest, deport or imprison those who are in violation.

These ideas may sound simplistic, and I understand many things would still need to be worked out (including a process for handling exceptions) but I think these reforms have merit.

It is easy to criticize somebodies ideas, much harder to come up with your own . . . I invite all comments but encourage your to throw out an idea or two.

I love watching Ninja Warrior. It is a crazy show out of Japan where one hundred contestants gather at the foot of Mt. Midoriyama to conquer a four stage obstacle course.

The obstacles are crazy and deep muddy water awaits to receive those who fail to safely traverse them.

Much of the time my children love watching with me.

If there is anyone who reads my blog with any regularity, they may have noticed it has been a while since I last posted.

Life happens.

My work restricted "social sites" from access. I won't complain but it is annoying when a few abuse a good thing and ruin it for the rest. That dealt a tough blow to my blogging habit because I did most of my blogging at lunch or breaks. Then when I get home I am usually exhausted or busy with family so I don' t sit down and write.

It also got busy at work, school and family.

I have really missed posting to my blogs and getting feedback from my 1 and 2/3 fans. Also I took a strengths test at work and one of my strengths recommended I write regularly. I do want to accomplish some of my new year goals.

I think most people shop religion the way they shop for cereal. The MTC cafeteria is a well oiled machine. It feeds three thousand missionaries three times a day in three, three hour blocks. It is amazing to see how quickly a line of a few hundred will snake through and get their food. Along the way there are strategically placed bins with different snacks, one of them had various ice cream treats.

One day I was standing in line and noticed Sister Laurel Armstrong eating a Mississippi Mud. At first blush this may seem unremarkable, however, given that she was a 5'3" very petite spiritual powerhouse it was a strange sight to see her indulge in a

frozen confection roughly the size of her head. So I strolled over and signed (everyone was required to use their language at all times). . .

Wow, that makes sense. I walked over to the bin, got a Mississippi Mud and . . . it worked! I used the Sister Armstrong Ice Cream Principle throughout my entire mission. When my companion and I were struggling, I'd pull in to some place and buy a couple frozen yogurts or ice creams. Then we were happier, it was easier to get the Spirit and move forward. I still use this principle today.

If you're in a funk and need the Spirit, find something - anything that brings a smile to your face, makes you happy and then it is much easier to pray and get the Spirit.

For Shabbat we went up to the Draper Temple open house. It was just wonderful to take the older children through and have a concentrated gospel teaching moment.

It was really great to show Havalah and J-Bo the sealing room and share with them my testimony of eternal families.

What a blessing that Heavenly Father gives to His children.

Mom was feeding her breakfast the other morning, eggs and potatoes. She intensely watched the fork as she was fed through most of the meal. Near the end, she politely asked for the fork, stabbed a potato and put it in her mouth like an expert!

I have a simple faith that there is healing after hurt. This intangible faith is confirmed by Scripture. For example, in the New Testament, after almost every record of Messiah teaching the people the narrative states, "He went about healing the people." Apparently, after He got your head on straight He would make sure the rest of you followed.

This pattern was followed when Messiah visited the Americas. After he had taught the people, He invited them to come forward and the third book of Nephi records, "And it came to pass that when he had thus spoken, all the multitude, with one accord, did go forth with their sick and their afflicted, and their lame, and with their blind, and with their dumb, and with all them that were afflicted in any manner; and he did heal them every one as they were brought forth unto him."

When it says He healed all them that were afflicted in any manner, I believe it includes the concealed wounds not apparent.

Shalom, kinda like aloha, is how you say hello and goodbye in contemporary Hebrew. Because of this, some of the significance and weight of this word has rubbed off.

You might already know that Shalom means peace in Hebrew. But it's not like hippy "Peace Dude!" It is a greeting or parting in peace - under the covenant.

This is critical concept to understand if you want to truly understand some scriptural passages.

Numbers 6 : 23 - 27

23 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,

24 The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:

25 The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

I believe the greatest attribute that separates us as children of a Heavenly Father from animals is Choice. Our agency is inseparably tied to our self awareness. Our little I AM and the power to choose is the only thing that is truly ours. Whenever we react to circumstance, other peoples choices, our own scripting - we give our agency to that event or person, even if only for a brief moment. We disempower ourselves and empower that something else.

Conversely, I have found I am greatly empowered when I respond to circumstance and others. I find I am more powerful, resourceful, and creative when I accept responsibility for my choices. I am by no means perfect at this but I am striving.

Many apologies to my few and faithful readers. Apparently a bunch of my co-workers were abusing their internet privileges and so a high mucky muck had technical restrictions laid down heavy. I understand and respect the decision but it is still a bummer that a few ruin it for all.

I am unable to access my blogspot site and publish posts during my breaks and lunches. Even worse, I am unable to view your blogs. This is really a big pick me up, especially on long days.

Immortal

I could totally go for being an immortal.

I have never understood those who look forward to their demise. Sure I would miss friends and family who had passed away but I would always remember them.

I think of all the good I could do, all the things I could learn, and all the experiences I could have. Just being a witness to history as it unfolds would be an amazing experience.

Here a short list of what I would do with my immortality. . .

I would become the ultimate businessman and put my vast wealth into charities, foundations, endowments, and projects. Some of my pet projects I would payroll would be . . .

I would love to fund a World Wide Water project. Bringing clean water to impoverished communities world wide. I believe this can be done affordably and effectively by creating a tuition grant program for engineering students.
Global vaccination program to eradicate polio and other preventable diseases
I would plug millions in the LDS Perpetual Education Fund
The US alone produces enough food to feed the world. The biggest issue in making food available to every mouth is transportation. I would love to solve the transportation issues which could eradicate hunger
Fund GWU, the building and expansion of its campus, and the building of satellite campuses globally

. . . the things I could learn . . .

I would learn to read, write, and speak every language in the world by living in each and every country for at least seven years. That should also give me a great understanding of the culture as well
I would learn a ton of musical instruments
I would continually study with the greatest minds in all the sciences and intellectual disciplines
I would learn the arts - painting, sculpture, etc

. . . the experiences I could have . . .

I would climb all the mountains
I would scuba dive all the cool spot and then find new ones
I would teach at a ton of schools
I would visit all the sacred sites in various countries
Tour de World at least a dozen times

So would you be immortal? What would you do in the time you had?

I had a good day, not because it was the V-Day, but because I got to spend the whole day with all my children up at my parents place.

Gid and Pookah got along famously. They jointly used Pookah's cast as their mutual percussion instrument. It was really funny!

Zefardeah was a princess as unual.

Havelah and J-Bo watched some DVDs and generally had fun.

Red hung out with my Mom and went window shopping.

Today is Friday the 13th!

Doesn't mean much to me but it got me thinking about what superstitions I do believe or at least wonder about.

I do knock on wood but more as a cliche'.

I do have a favorite color that I always win Risk with.

I also have certain properties in Monopoly that are a must buy and other that I will generally pass on.

Or as I like to call it - Obligatory Superficial Commercialized Love Day (shortened to OLD, Obligatory Love Day). You know, if I change it to Superficial Commercialized Obligatory Love Day the acronym would be SCOLD! I digress.

Am I the only one that feels this way?!

If I were a woman, I would be insulted. All the men, like zombie lemmings, line up to buy all the myriad things we haaaave to buy to reaaallly say I love you . . . and then your supposed to act all surprised!

Oh, I had noooo idea. Is it Valentine's???! Silly me, that holiday always slips my mind, kinda like Canadian Boxing Day.

If a guy wants to get you somethin' to surprise you and say I love you, he should do it when you aren't expecting it. It should be done on a average, random day when you wouldn't think he was thinkin' of you more than normal.

Yay to true love, genuine appreciation, and eternal companionships!

Pookah Choo Part III

Pookah's left leg and hip didn't take the first time 'round so they needed to operate again to get the leg bone connected to the hip bone. As before, she was just a champion.

A little light reading to relax before the surgery . . .

They drugged her and she is still going strong . . .

Here she is after the surgery. That curved fiber glass support represents the latest in casting technology. It is supposed to make it easier to change diapers and carry Pookah. She was the first our surgeon used it on and he is keen to hear our feedback.

The surgeon is very positive about the procedure and the probability of success.

A while ago I was driving a group of friends to lunch. I was going to play some tunes from my MP3 player when I realized all my music was rather mellow and did not suit the party atmosphere. Now I like all kinds of music and I can certainly enjoy some night-at-the-roxeberry techno jamming and other fun stuff, but my playlists are loaded with mellow stuff.

I like cerebral, melodic music. My playlist comprise of artists like Jewel, James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, Colbe Caillat, and Jimmy Buffet.

I don't think it makes me a wuss but . . . if music be the food of love, play on!
